چکیده

The quantitation of immunoglobulins in human sera is a common procedure in clinical laboratories and is useful both for clinical and research purposes. Several papers have been published on the subject. Because significant age-related changes occur before adult life, most reports deal with immunoglobulin values in normal children (1-4). However, the data from different laboratories are difficult to compare because a wide variety of immunoglobulin preparations, obtained from different sources, have been used as standards for the quantitation; thus, data expressed in mg/100 ml and based on local immunoglobulin standards are of limited use for comparative studies. With the object of improving the uniformity of immunoglobulin quantitations in different laboratories, an international reference preparation for human serum immunoglobulins has been established (5) by the WHO International Center for Immunoglobulins. It has been recommended (6) that the concentration of the individual immunoglobulins be estimated against this reference preparation and expressed in International Units (I.U.) per milliliter. Our aim was to establish normal serum immunoglobulin values from birth to adulthood, in terms of I.U./ml; this approach should help in unifying immunoglobulin quantitations on the basis of the international standard, facilitate valid comparisons between different laboratories, and lead to full appreciation of the clinical significance of immunoglobulin determinations.

Serum immunoglobulin concentrations in preschool children measured by laser nephelometry: reference ranges for IgG, IgA, IgM.

Serum immunoglobulin concentrations were determined on sera from 298 healthy children aged six months to six years using the Hyland laser nephelometer PDQ system. Age-specific 95% reference ranges for serum IgG, IgA and IgM are presented; considerable care has been taken to ensure statistical validity of the reference ranges. The wide range of values in children under two years suggest that mea...

Collaborative study to recalibrate the International Reference Preparation of Anti-D Immunoglobulin.

A collaborative study involving nine independent assays by eight laboratories has recalibrated the anti-D concentration of the International Reference Preparation of Anti-D Immunoglobulin (68/417) in terms of the International Standard for Anti-Rho (anti-D) Incomplete Blood Typing Serum (64/16). This study was carried out when it was found that 68/419 had been calibrated not against 64/16, as o...

THE STUDY OF OPSONIZATION ACTIVITY OF THE PHAGOCYTOSIS PROCESS IN MENINGITIS, SEPSIS, AND RECURRENT INFECTION IN CHILDREN

In this survey, opsonization activity of sera in 110 patients with meningitis, sepsis and recurrent infection 12 patients after healing and 50 normal adults has been studied. Opsonization activity was measured by an assay depending on electronic particle counting to measure yeast uptake (alternative pathway activator) which was modified in our laboratory. Three classes of immunoglobulins (...

A direct binding assay for rheumatoid factor serum antiglobulins using fluorescein-labelled Fc fragment of human immunoglobulin-G.

A simple routine method is described for the quantitation of antiglobulin (rheumatoid factor) in human serum irrespective of its immunoglobulin class. Papain Fc fragment of human IgG is labelled with fluorescein isothiocyanate and incubated with the serum. Bound Fc is separated from free Fc by precipitation with polyethylene glycol and measured by the fluorescence of the precipitate. Results ar...

Specific IgG Response against Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis in Children and Adults with Crohn’s Disease

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Presence of serum antibodies against Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis (MAP) in Crohn's Disease (CD) as a disease characteristic remains controversial. In the present work, we assessed antibody reactivity of serum and intestinal fluid against four distinct MAP-antigens, including the recently identified MAP-specific lipopentapeptide (L5P). METHODS Immunoglobulin concent...
